I adore writing whodunits, possessing that puzzler’s satisfaction in piecing together clues to catch a baddie (in my case, also bumping off baddies because I’m loath to make any of the victims less than awful, if not entirely deserving of their fate), but I’m never more than a few pen-strokes away from affairs of the heart. For those of you who miss the romances and romps, rest assured that the Village Detectives series remains at the cosiest comic end of the genre, its characters full of heart and high jinks. Each instalment comes with a thoroughly loved-up subplot, and The Deadly Brew is no exception, with flirtation and friendship at its core. While an occasional dead body might divert our sleuths from the course of true love, they are slow-burning their way to ever-more hot-under-the-collar action. If I authored dystopian sci-fi, the robots would be making eyes at each other from page one.

I’ve received a lot of messages lately asking me when I’m going to go back to big rural romances, and I confess I do yearn to write pure escapism again too, packed with horses, dogs and devastatingly sexy men in breeches. It would be heavenly if a publisher backed that idea, but that’s simply not the way things are right now, and it’s not for the want of trying. I won’t give up hope that I might one day combine my life of crime capers with pure, unadulterated romping, and I have a hundred plot ideas up my sleeve just in case that wind changes.
